Your Guide to the Adventure of Marketing

When it comes to getting the word out, you need a guide who knows how to zip around obstacles and who understands the fear, uncertainty and stakes involved.

Marcia Yudkin has been exploring the wilds of self-promotion for 40 years - or nearly all her life, if you count her appearance on TV at the age of 7, reading poems she had written.

She has an unparalleled ability to find the words for a message that makes even the cackling birds stop and listen.  With clients, she quickly uncovers the strengths, talents, angles and offerings that attract customers willing to pay and that transform floundering into creative moves and confidence.

Hiding Out in Hawaii

In 1981, she quit academic life the same week her first published article appeared in the Sunday New York Times, describing her experiences as a faculty member who looked like (and was tempted to act like) a student.  During the next few years, her bylines in national magazines on journalistic and opinion pieces began piling up.

Marcia's current focus is her weekly newsletter, Introvert UpThink, which critiques the many misunderstandings and myths about introverts in our extrovert-dominant culture.  Introvert UpThink also discusses how introverts are portrayed in novels, poetry and nonfiction.

She's also begun publishing essays again after a hiatus of decades. See Marcia Yudkin's literary bio and portfolio here.

In the mid-1980s, the University of Massachusetts sent her to the Foreign Languages Press in Beijing for a year on an exchange program.  China was just opening up to the West at that time, and while her position as a writer and editor opened doors to her around the country, she experienced her workplace as a labyrinth of secrets and endured a winter without fresh vegetables.  (And yes, she learned to speak Mandarin!)

Around the time she published her first book, on freelance writing, with Harper and Row in 1988, she began discovering the fun of public speaking, mentoring and helping clients to find their best promotional path.

As her list of published books lengthened, she pioneered the first author web site for Penguin USA in 1995, established one of the longest- running, weekly marketing newsletters, her Marketing Minute, in 1998, and became the most-often-featured commentator on WBUR, a Boston public radio station, from 1999 to 2001.

In 2007, she began retooling her business so she would have more time for swimming, reading and adventure travel.  Marcia now lives in the woods of Western Massachusetts eight months of the year and the rest of the time on Maui.

Her clients range from grizzled entrepreneurs to nervous newly self-employed professionals, from software publishers and ecommerce startups to media companies, associations and independent educational programs.
